BOOM BABIES BECKON FOR QUEENSLAND
A 90 percent strike rate has netted crack Queensland stallion and proven Group 1 performer, Spirit of Boom an impressive 139 mares in-foal, during his first season at Eureka Stud on the Darling Downs.
In what rates as the second biggest book of mares covered in the State during 2014, Spirit of Boom’s progeny represents a calibre that’s sure to make a mark on the Australian thoroughbred racing scene.
“Given this horse’s strong bloodlines plus pedigree as a dual Group 1 winner, having claimed victory in the William Reid Stakes and Doomben 10,000 in 2014, it’s no surprise he’s piqued interest among breeders,” confirmed Eureka Stud owner Scott McAlpine.
“He was always destined for a return to his birthplace here at Eureka, but solid performances on the track have only enhanced the allure.
“We’re talking about a horse that garnered a cult following in his racing days and I’m sure that tradition will continue well into the future, particularly given the black type performed or producing mares that have ventured out this way during the breeding season.”
The 7-year-old is certain to match the breeding feats of his late father, Sequalo, having aroused particular interest from home-state breeders.
“Kenbelle, the dam of triple Group 1 winner Boban plus Truly Brave, the dam of 2014 Queensland Oaks winner, Tinto gives you a proper insight into the quality of horse we’re talking about here,” added McAlpine.
“There are a further three mares who have produced Group 1 winners plus proven track performers in their own right including listed winner Pure Purffection and Group 2 victor, Express Air.
“There are also mares who have traditionally been serviced by Sequalo, with owners intent on maintaining that proven successful line. Of particular interest will be the pairing with five-time Stakes winner Missy Longstocking’s dam Linyanti.”
With the precociousness to be a listed winner, who was Group 2 placed as a 2-year-old, and the durability to win Group 1 races as a 6-year-old, Spirit of Boom provides future owners with the realistic chance of having a Magic Millions horse or one that can race in a Stradbroke Handicap as a 7-year-old. Only time will tell how successful his stud career envelops, but it will come as no surprise to connections if he was to exceed his illustrious exploits out on the track with this recent career change.
